Rebecca Dow has spent much of 2026 moving at a remarkable speed. The conclusion of Virgins brought one chapter of her musical life to a close, while the months since have opened several fresh routes for her songwriting. Regular Static Sounds Club readers will already know how much I value her voice, both for its range and for the feeling she places inside every phrase. Her work with the alternative rock project Orchids extended that story, as did her recent collaborative project The Mountain which you can read about here.
On ‘Beneath You’, she joins forces with fellow Belfast multi-instrumentalist and former Virgins guitarist David Sloan. Their shared history gives the single an immediate sense of trust, while its darker tone suggests that both musicians are ready to carry their partnership somewhere new. Rebecca explains that this period of activity has arrived with a renewed appetite for working alongside other artists.

‘Beneath You’ begins from a place of intimacy, with Rebecca’s vocal performance sitting close enough for every breath and change in tone to register. As the song develops, Rebecca moves through the full range that made her previous work so memorable. The restrained passages carry vulnerability, while the larger vocal moments arrive with the force of feelings held back for too long. She brings emotional scale without losing control of the story.
‘Beneath You’ places Rebecca Dow and David Sloan at the beginning of a promising period beyond Virgins. Their musical connection remains clear, yet the single carries the freedom of two artists choosing how that connection develops from here. Rebecca sounds open, assured and ready to follow the ideas arriving across her many current projects. Sloan provides a setting that respects her softer delivery while giving her louder moments room to expand. Whatever comes next, ‘Beneath You’ suggests plenty is already moving beneath the surface.
